About Milk

My mad DJ alter ego Milk blends funk, acid jazz, trip-hop, urban breakbeats, ambient dub and symphonic punk country disco grooves into a freestyle musical collage to shake booties and induce pleasant dreams. I claim no particular style as my own, my personal signatures are the spontaneous and the eclectic.

Music held a powerful attraction for me at an early age, heavy rotation for the formative years included:

* Age 5 - Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head - Burt Bacharach

* Age 6 - Iron Man - Black Sabbath

* Age 9 - 1812 Overture - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

* Age 13 - Everything by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie & King Crimson

* Age 15 - The Plateaux of Mirror  - Brian Eno

I began DJing in 1986, spinning indie rock & psychedelic punk during the prime time 10-midnight Saturday evening slot  at WPRB 103.3 - a 30,000 watt commercial radio station recognized by Spin magazine as the best alternative station in the country that year.

Following a steady musical diet of Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Ministry and Scratch Acid, my interests abruptly forked when I began obsessively listening to Lady B’s “Street Beat” show on Philly’s Power 99. A new passion for hip hop led me to explore its origins in jazz and R&B. I also credit King Britt’s “Full Circle” radio show at Philadelphia’s Temple University with schooling me in the early roots of hip hop in funk and soul.

I consider myself “the accidental DJ” - I never had any ambition to play dance music in clubs. In the early 90s, the music of Coldcut and their fine artists at Ninja Tune was my soundtrack when I was living in New York. Their artistry sharpened my appreciation for the craft of the turntable. After I moved back to Denver, in the mid-90s, I befriended a crew of DJs who mixed an unusual style that would soon be labeled “nu skool breaks” - given my other interests I immediately gravitated to this new sound. My friends chided me for having so many records but not knowing how to beatmatch (and for having such a ghetto stereo set-up). And now. . . almost ten years later. . . let’s just say I’ve learned. . .  to extend my selfish little vice into experiences other people can enjoy. . . and that few things allow for shared memories better than massive sound with the right groove.

My mission is to give the people what they want. Funky breaks and house for the dancers, downtempo electro-lounge music for the groovers, ancient middle eastern and central asian rhythms for the spirited souls, and some more far out vibrations for the discriminating few.  And there’s that peculiar stuff that only I listen too, but rest assured I’m busily working on breaking it out to the masses.

Regards and Respect to the many collaborators who helped me out along the way and keep propeling me further.
