Breakin’ Through to the Next Level

Way back in the 70s, Kool Herc ignited the cultural phenomenon of hip hop by importing the Jamaican traditions of “toasting” and sound systems to New York. Thirty years later, hip hop has indisputably become the dominantly influential form of music. Graffiti art, the urban visual expression of hip hop, increasingly manifests itself mainstream culture yet remains dynamically creative, as documented by the “lowbrow” art journal Juxtapoz. And breakdancing can no longer be discounted as just a fad. Evolving as much as the other forms of hip hop, it’s taking over the world, as evidenced by this freakin’ amazing video:
